I was a Consultant Paediatric Anesthetist at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children for many years and I have recently retired from full time clinical practice. As Clinical Director of the Children’s Hospital for 10 years I was not only closely involved in the management and running of the hospital but also played a pivotal role in the planning and development of the new Children’s Hospital which opened in April 2001.
It was realized very early that it was important to provide sleeping facilities for a parent with their child in the new hospital. However it was also essential to establish family accommodation, as a separate entity from the hospital, where families could try and continue a normal life whilst supporting their child throughout their illness. With the support of Ronald McDonald Charities the development of a family facility in Bristol , Ronald McDonald House, was established and was built on part of the old Children’s Hospital site and opened in 2002.
I became a Trustee of the Charity the same year and have great admiration for the team that continue to run and develop the facilities for all our families. I have been a keen participant in fundraising efforts for many years and hope to continue my involvement in Ronald McDonald House, Bristol for many years to come.
